What’s NEXT? Charting Your Path

A community of practice centered around helping faculty envision new opportunities, gain momentum, and achieve a career goal through participation in seminars, mentorships, and a final project.

2022 Faculty Plans

Curious what 2022 faculty are working on?

The What’s NEXT? Charting Your Path program is designed for faculty at Texas State who are seeking career development opportunities in leadership, research, or teaching. In order to qualify for consideration, applicants must be in a full-time faculty position with at least seven (7) years of full-time faculty service at Texas State. Both nontenure line and tenured faculty are eligible.

In a “choose your own adventure” model, faculty start with a goal or idea of a path they would like to explore in their own career development. Through a self-nomination process, 12-15 faculty will be chosen to participate in building a community of practice around individual and collective career development strategies. The nomination process begins in October 2021, with participants for the first cohort announced in November 2021.

Monthly sessions in spring 2022 will consist of topical presentations by experts as well as community-building activities. These five sessions will focus on helping participants create a strategic plan to develop their skills in and knowledge about their chosen career development areas. Session topics are broad enough to be able to be useful to all members of the community, whether they have chosen leadership, research, or teaching, and each session will be led by an external or internal expert. Participants will be required to find a mentor to help them develop their plan. Participants who attend all five sessions will be eligible for $500, either as a stipend or university funds to support travel, equipment, publication fees, etc.

Participants should be able to develop their plans throughout the course of the spring 2022 semester. In June 2022 they will finish their plans and submit them. Once plans are submitted, participants will be eligible for $1000 in university funds to be applied to an element of their plans (conference, equipment, publication fees, etc.).

After participants enact the plan (or whatever they accomplish), they will regroup as a community to reflect and share what they learn.
