Escala: Teaching with Equity in Mind
“The ESCALA CTL-HSI is the only teaching program in the country that focuses on increasing Latinx student success in Hispanic Serving Institutions through long-term professional development and coaching on culturally responsive instruction."

The Certificate of College Teaching & Learning in HSIs is an innovative leadership course designed by and for faculty in both two and four-year Hispanic Serving Institutions. ESCALA's course is unique in that faculty receive both workshop time as well as individualized coaching as they make culturally responsive changes to their work with Latinx students. Since 2013, more than 600 faculty in 32 HSIs have completed the program. In this course faculty use observation tools to analyze engagement and equity in their own courses, as well as learn practical ways they can apply the principles of culturally responsive teaching. Course activities are balanced between individual reflection on data and peer discussions to support faculty as they take steps to improve learning equity in their classrooms.

The 27-hour course includes:

  • A 3-day virtual retreat in summer with faculty from other HSIs
  • 2 fall virtual workshops to revisit and deepen learning
  • 6 hours of 1:1 coaching with another trained reflective HSI faculty member
  • Interactive Canvas course with demonstrations of best practices in culturally responsive online learning environments

As a result of the activities, faculty complete an equity-based, research-driven classroom intervention and present their work to their campus and ESCALA staff at the conclusion of the course.
